I put forward a proposal of a railway navigation system that would be highly beneficial to the national railway infrastructure. This system would provide accurate and precise information contributing towards health and safety whilst reducing cost implications.
My Idea is for a railway based sat nav hand held system that works in a similar way to the tomtom nav system for the road network. The difference being the system would show the railway in clear detail i.e the lines at the site, current mileage, the access name, all signals including SPT's, your controlling signal box for the area, all sectional appendix and hazard directory information relevant to the area it would even state the nearest hospital. Being honest the limit to the information you could receive would be far superior to any COSS brief. It could even show buried services in the area which would help close out cable strikes on the infrastructure. Other benefits that come to mind would be the information easily accessible to a COSS who is unfamiliar to the area more or less giving them all briefing information they would require. The system would wipe out the amount of T2 irregularities as it would state the line needing blocked and visually show them if they were wrong, it would help PICOPS when they want to place protection down on a specific line; they would only have to plot the line location on the palm top system and the railway nav would lead them to the exact spot for the protection to be placed. In case of accidents it would pin point the Work party's exact location. It could even be integrated with the GSM-R system picking up when trains are approaching. It could also benefit the machine operators on the railway as they would see that they were on the approach to S&C, bridges L/Crossings, cants and even the track gradients, and sounding alarm if they were to approach the worksite limits. I feel that an item of with this capability would be highly beneficial to the railway infrastructure and the personnel working and travelling within it. This day and age I would also think it could be very achievable
